Main Disadvantages

Relatively high cost: Stainless steel material prices are higher than ordinary carbon steel, resulting in higher initial procurement costs, but may be a more economical solution in the long term considering life cycle costs.

Rust can still occur under certain conditions:

Material factors: if low nickel stainless steel such as 201 is used as 304/316, or "poor chromium area" occurs in the production process, the rust prevention ability will be greatly reduced.

Environmental factors: In the chlorine ion (such as sea water, swimming pool), high temperature and high humidity or acid and alkali chemical contact in the harsh environment, passivation film may be damaged resulting in pitting corrosion or rust.

Mechanical property Limitations:

Strength and toughness: Compared with high-strength carbon steel, some stainless steel screws have low hardness, easy to break when extreme force or torque is too large, and there are differences in toughness performance.

Bite death risk: if the lock is not removed for a long time, cold welding between stainless steel threads is easy to occur, resulting in adhesion, increasing the difficulty of disassembly.

Risk of sliding teeth: when the force is too large or the material is not good, it is easy to slip teeth.

Purchase and use recommendations

Material selection: 304 material can be selected for ordinary environment, 316 material is recommended for coastal or strong corrosion environment, avoid using 201 material for outdoor or humid environment.

Standard installation: use stainless steel special tools, avoid direct contact with carbon steel, copper and other heterogeneous metals to prevent galvanic corrosion, clean up the surface welding slag or debris after installation.

Regular maintenance: clean up surface contaminants every 6-12 months, keep dry, find mild rust can be wiped with neutral detergent and do passivation treatment.
